Getting started with Orbit Growth

What this page is — the first visit to Orbit Growth, step by step: who can see it, where it appears, and the three checklist steps that make a project ready.

What it is for — getting one project from "Growth was just added to our plan" to a checklist that reads 3 of 3 done, with the right people able to see it and the right people able to change it.

The problem it solves — Growth has five permissions spread over two modules, and a user who holds the wrong mix sees a cockpit with no way into its settings, or settings with no Save button. This page says which role gives which view before you hand anything out.

1. Where Growth appears

Once Orbit Growth is in the organisation's plan, it shows up in six places.

Quick Create

The plus icon in the header, tooltip Quick Create, opens a box headed Quick Actions with a Search actions… field. Growth adds two actions to it.

#ElementWhat it does
1The plus iconOpens and closes the box
2Search actions…Narrows the list as you type
3Set up brand kitOpens Growth Settings on Brand Kit with the editor already open

Add business website, not shown in this filtered list, opens Growth Settings on Business.

The search matches the name of the action and nothing else. Typing brand finds Set up brand kit, and typing website finds Add business website. Typing growth finds neither, because the word is not in either name.

Both actions are for people who may change the settings. They are listed only for roles that hold Edit Growth Settings: website address and brand kit.

The search in the header finds Growth's screens by name. All four entries are listed under Orbit Growth: Growth Cockpit, Growth Settings, Growth Business Website and Growth Brand Kit.

Each entry is shown only to users whose role allows it, which is the subject of the next section.

2. Who can see what

The package

Nobody in the organisation sees Growth until the plan includes Orbit Growth. Adding it also adds Orbit Pulse, because Growth depends on it. See Growth needs Orbit Pulse.

The five permissions

These are the names the role editor shows.

PermissionWhat it allows
Show Growth Cockpit in the Orbit Growth sidebar. The Growth Cockpit entry in the sidebar
Open the Growth Cockpit and see setup status.Opening the cockpit and reading the checklist
Show Growth Settings in the header settings menu. The Growth Settings entry in the header settings menu
View Growth Settings, including the brand kit.Opening Growth Settings and reading both sections. Also shows the gear on the cockpit and the links in the first two checklist rows
Edit Growth Settings: website address and brand kit.Saving the website address, editing the brand kit and uploading a logo

The three role templates

When you create a role on the organisation's roles screen, Use Template offers three ready-made Growth roles.

TemplateCockpitGrowth SettingsCan save
Orbit Growth ViewerSees it and reads the checklistCannot open it. The checklist rows for the website and the brand kit carry no linkNo
Orbit Growth MemberSees it and reads the checklistOpens both sections, read-onlyNo
Orbit Growth AdministratorSees it and reads the checklistOpens both sectionsYes

All three see the Orbit Growth card on the main Cockpit. Only the Administrator has the two Quick Create actions.

Member is a read-only role in Growth today

Everything a Member can do in Growth is look. The website field shows You can view this setting but not change it. and the Brand Kit section has no Edit button. If somebody needs to fill in the checklist, give them the Administrator template or the edit permission.

The project

Growth is per project, and it checks membership. A user with the right role who is not a member of the selected project gets You are not a member of this project. instead of the checklist. Add them under Project Access Control.

The third checklist row links to Tools Integrations. That link is shown only to users who hold View Connected Accounts, which is not a Growth permission.

3. The first visit

  1. Select the project in the project selector at the top of the screen.
  2. Open Orbit Growth → Growth Cockpit in the sidebar.
  3. Read How Growth works: four stages, repeated every week, so your marketing keeps improving.
  4. Look at Setup checklist. Its badge counts what is finished, for example 1 of 3 done.
Figure 2 — The checklist on a project where nothing has been saved yet. 1 Business website · 2 Brand kit · 3 Facebook Page connected.

If you press Get started at this point, a notice titled Discovery is coming next tells you that the discovery questionnaire is not available yet and asks you to finish the checklist meanwhile. Nothing is started and nothing is charged.

4. The three checklist steps

#RowLink while pendingWhat to doTurns to Done when
1Business websiteAdd websiteType the project's public web address and press SaveAn address is saved for this project
2Brand kitSet up brand kitPress Edit, review the values, and press Save in the drawerA brand kit has been saved for this project
3Facebook Page connectedConnectConnect a Facebook Page under Tools IntegrationsThe project can use a connected Facebook Page

Step 1 — Business website

Add website opens Growth Settings → Business. Type the address and press Save. You may leave out https://; it is added for you. The row then shows the saved address in place of its hint. Details: Business website.

Step 2 — Brand kit

Set up brand kit opens Growth Settings → Brand Kit. If the project or the organisation already has branding, the colours and the logo are filled in for you, with a message such as Copied from your store branding. Review and save.

A pre-filled brand kit is not a saved brand kit

The copied values are a suggestion. The checklist row stays Pending until somebody opens Edit and presses Save, even if they change nothing.

Details: Brand Kit.

Step 3 — Facebook Page connected

This row is marked Optional for now while it is pending. Its hint reads Needed later, when Growth starts publishing posts for you. It turns to Done when the project can use a connected Facebook Page, either one connected for this project or one connected for the whole organisation. An ad account or a business connection does not count, and neither does a connection that has expired.

You can leave this step until later. The first two are the ones that need your own decisions.

5. Why you would use it this way

Doing the steps in checklist order saves a return trip. The website comes first because it is one field and needs no discussion. The brand kit comes second because it usually needs a second person: the one who knows which blue is the right blue. The Facebook connection is last because it may already be there, and because it is not needed until Growth publishes.

Giving only one or two people the Administrator template is also deliberate. A brand kit that anybody can edit drifts, and every later piece of content would inherit the drift.

6. Worked example

A dental practice has one project, City Clinic, and three people who need Growth.

PersonRole givenWhat they see
Asha, the practice managerOrbit Growth AdministratorCockpit, both settings sections, Save and Edit
Ravi, front deskOrbit Growth MemberCockpit and both settings sections, without Save or Edit
The ownerOrbit Growth ViewerCockpit only. The first two rows have a badge and no link

Asha opens the cockpit: 1 of 3 done. She follows Add website, types cityclinic.example.com, and saves; the field now reads https://cityclinic.example.com. She follows Set up brand kit, finds two colours copied from the organisation's branding, uploads the logo, picks Warm and personal as the tone, types cheap, painless under Words to avoid, and saves.

The owner refreshes the cockpit and sees 3 of 3 done without being able to change any of it.

7. Field reference — what each step asks for

StepFieldRequiredRule in one line
Business websiteWebsite addressTo complete the stepA web address with a domain name, up to 2,000 characters
Brand kitLogoNoPNG, JPG or WebP, up to 2 MB
Brand kitPrimary colour, Secondary colour, Accent colourNoA six-digit hex code such as #1A2B3C
Brand kitHeading font, Body fontNoChosen from a list of twelve
Brand kitTone of voiceNoChosen from a list of six
Brand kitWords to avoidNoFree text, up to 500 characters

No brand kit field is required. Saving an empty kit still completes the step, which is rarely what you want.

8. Before this works — what an administrator sets up
